OUR STORY

How our journey began in crazy poultry land....

It was the spring of 2009 when the Easter Bunny delivered 5 cute baby chicks of different breeds Easter morning . We just loved having chickens on the farm and had been raising them since we moved there.

That April, we decided to join 4-H.  Hi, I'm Lane Fischer and I'm 11 yrs old, I have 2 brothers, Coby-10 and Jacy 9 and my lil' sister who is now 4.  I was 8 yrs old when we joined my sister was just 9 mo old.  Since we had chickens we decided we would show them at the county fair.  There were many families who had a poultry project so we were on our own.  When it was time to enter our birds, we did not even know the breed or variety of our chickens. At the fair, we went to the judging contest and learned so much from the judge, we was fantastic.  At that time we knew we needed to learn more.  To say the least, we did not do well but it was a great learning experience.

One of the Co. poultry superintendents had told us that we needed to start looking for chickens right away after the fair so we would be sure to get some by next year.  Still, we did not have a clue about this entire industry of showing chickens.  It wasn't until about 1 mo after the fair that my parents did a lot of research online and discovered there  was a thing called "Showbirds"  The light bulb went on and we were excited to get moving with it.  Let's say we got "chicken fever."  I guess the Easter Bunny didn't know there was a difference between hatchery birds and show birds, and neither did we!

So our journey began, my dad fell in love with a little Silverlaced Wyandotte hen we had, and thought she was the prettiest thing.  It was decided we would raise and show SLW.  So we searched the internet and called, and called, and called till we found someone who was selling chicks as well trios and so we were off.  Loaded the family up and made the 10hr trip with all 6 of us in our SUV.  We brought home those chicks and birds in our vehicle, (boy, they smelled) but we made it.

Ever since, we have been raising and hatching the SLW and absolutely love them.  We also added to our flock the White Wyandotte Large fowl also White Wyandotte bantams.  We needed to get a variety to show so my brothers and I were not competing against each other.    Then we went to see what the Kansas Classic Poultry Show was all about in 2011 and ended up coming home with 2 white call ducks.

Most recently, we went to the Kansas Classic to actually show our birds and ended up coming home with some Plymouth Barred Rocks.  Check out our other pages to see our winnings at the Kansas Classic.  We were so surprised as this was our first event outside of the 4H shows.
